Curriculum Outline for 6th grade 2011-2012

RELIGION

  • We will examine: who we are in God’s world, the Old Testament, the Church, Prayer, our Faith and recognize The Word of God in our daily lives.
  • Family Life

LANAGUAGE ARTS
Literature:

  • Explore different genres including poetry, fantasy, historical pieces, biographies and autobiographies just to name a few.
  • Discuss and listen to other’s points of view
  • Understand grade level appropriate words and material
  • Produce projects that relate to these areas
  • You must ALWAYS have a book to read when you finish an assignment or it is silent reading time.

Writing:

  • Write clear, focused essays and other pieces that show awareness of an audience and purpose
  • Use the writing process which includes: pre-writing, drafts, peer response, editing, rewriting, proof reading and publication.
  • Use correct punctuation and capitalization

Grammar:

  • Correct usage
  • Spelling
  • Vocabulary

SCIENCE
Earth Science

  • Plate Tectonics
  • Organisms in ecosystems
  • Natural Resources
  • Topography
  • Minerals and Rocks
  • Lab experiments

MATH

SOCIAL STUDIES
Ancient Civilization

  • Archeology
  • Egypt, Mesopotamia, India and China
  • Linking the past to our present

We will also be doing many projects and activities related to these areas. Some projects will be completed in class and some will be completed at home. Some will be short term and some will be long term. There will be specific directions for every project or assignment. Points will be taken off for late work. Points will vary by assignment.

Discipline: I would like to respect the fact that the 6th graders are almost in Jr. High so I will start the year by not using the colored chart that the younger classes use for discipline. However, if this doesn’t seem to be successful, I will bring in the colored chart. The students and I will make a rules and consequences chart together.
