Class expectations…

  • Following school and classroom rules. We will make up our Classroom rules on the first days of school.

Within our day we have times for play and relaxation: AM recess and restroom break. Noon Lunch recess and restroom break. Short PM restroom break about 1:30 or so. If more restroom breaks are needed for health reasons, please make me aware of this need, as well other health needs which might exist.

CURRICULUM INFORMATION
RELIGION : Call to Faith Series by Harcourt Brace.
Includes the topics of Creation, the Trinity, Christ's Death/Resurrection/Ascension, Four Signs of the Church , Concept of Forgiveness, the Sacraments , The Church as a sign of God’s Covenant.

LANGUAGE ARTS: Macmillan/ McGraw-Hill Series.
Reading Series. Works to improve reading skills. These include comprehension skills such as make predictions figure out problems/solutions, summarize, compare/contrast, main idea, to mention a few of the concepts covered.

Spelling and Phonics: Uses list of words connected with stories in the Reading Literature Book Each week there is a new list of words . I also use Vocabulary words from the Social Studies and Science books to supplement the Spelling list. We build on the phonics skills acquired in the lower grades.

Grammar: Skills include learning correct capitalization, punctuation, parts of speech, correct word usage, as well as writing complete sentences , complete paragraphs , and editing skills.

MATH: Houghton Mifflin Mathematics Series. This series meets the goals/objectives of California Mathematics Content Standards.

Important Components: Students understand place value through hundred -thousands. have mastered multiplication and division facts through 12’s, can multiply multi-digit numbers by one digit, divide multi-digit numbers by one digit. Have a basic knowledge of fractions, able to understand equivalency of simple fractions, add/subtract simple fractions, understand the relationship of fractions and decimals.

SOCIAL STUDIES: Houghton Mifflin: History-Social Studies Series. This series meets California’s grade level standards.
This series explores the concept of Communities and their relationship to our land and resources. Students learn about Native American Communities, Explorers, Colonists, The Westward Movement, Immigrants on both Coasts. We delve into the structure of community, State, and National Government. We see the influence of economics/trade, and culture in our country. We learn about holidays and heroes of the United States Students are taught map and globe skills, chart and graphs skills. We learn about some important people in our country’s history.

SCIENCE: Houghton Mifflin Science Discovery Works. California Edition

This series' curriculum includes:

  1. Roles of living things in relationship to their environment.
  2. Matter, Energy and Forces: their properties’ states and changes.
  3. Sun, Moon, and Earth, their physical features, planets of the solar system.
  4. Earth’s Resources. The importance of air, water, and land in relationship to one another.
