St. John's Student Athletics
Wednesday March 3, 2010
We are very proud of all of our student athletes who continue to show sportsmanship, teamwork and discipline through their game. This past season ALL four of our basketball teams made it to the second round of the playoffs....that is quite an accomplishment! Not only do our teams work hard but they play fair and that is another reason we are proud. Congratulations to coaches, teams and St. John's!!
" I have missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game-winning shot and I missed. I have failed over and over again in my life - and that's precisely why I succeed."
Michael Jordan
Coach's Game Notes:
The 5th Grade Boys basketball team had a good season posting a 4-2 regular season record and advancing to the 2nd round of the year-end Tourney. I am proud of each and everyone of my players and I have been blessed this year to have 2 great coaches in Mike and Ivo. I thank the parents for their gracious and enthusiastic support of the team. The staff and I look forward to next year's season with great anticipation as we know we have the ability to become the best team in our Division - Coach John
Our 5th Grade Girls started the tournament on a roll, beating St. Rose in the first round by a score of 28-12. All the girls played well together as a team in all areas of the game - defense, rebounding, passing, shooting and ball handling. Belle and Natalia had a season high 12 points each, Gabby had 2 points and Maggie also scored 2 points. In the second round, the girls continued to play well and led at the end of the first quarter by 3 points against top-seeded St. Eugene's. In the end, St. Eugene's superior height and squad size (17 girls) was the difference. Our girls played hard and with tremendous spirit, even diving for loose balls right to the end. Belle scored 8 points. No coaches could ask for greater effort from their players all season long. Thanks to Belle, Erin, Gabby, Lori, Maggie, Maycie, Natalia, Olivia and all the parents for a terrific season.
Go Gaels.

Kids who play sports have an opportunity to learn both team work and leadership skills, valuable skills that become important as they transition to high school sports where determination and discipline become important. This week's alumni note is about Ben, a favorite both in the classroom and on the court. Ben learned these lessons well and exhibits terrific leadership not only in basketball but school life at Vintage.

My son, Gianni, who plays with Ben on the basketball team, says
-Ben ALWAYS plays through any adversity and never gives up. He is awesome.-
As you can see, sports is not the most important aspect of a high school student-athlete, Hard work is.
Alumni News: Vintage Senior and St. John's Alumni, Ben Molinari has earned numerous individual honors and awards including being named Captain of the Vintage basketball team and Most Valuable Player two years in a row. He earned all-MEL honors for the last two years and was all-Napa County Offensive Player of the year. A past President of his junior class, Ben excels in the classroom and within the vintage community as well. A member of the National Honor Society and in the top 5% of his class, Ben participates in a wide range of Vintage activities including the Environmental Club (he is president), Best Buddies, Boys State and Crusher Crew.
In explaining his success, Ben doesn't point to his obvious and numerous individual talents, but to: -Persistence and the value of hard work-.

Coach's Game Notes: Our 5th Grade Boys had another nail biter against St. Mary's of Ukiah. We won 34 to 32. Dan had a career best 20 points and Oscar had 14 points. The whole team played excellent defense with Ky and Justin leading the charge on grabbing rebounds.
Our 5th Grade Girls won their second straight game on Saturday with a 9-8 win over St. John's Healdsburg. A free throw by Natalia in the 4th quarter was the point difference in this game which was, once again, won by the girls' stellar team defense. The team notched many steals while forcing a multitude of jump balls and doing a terrific job of rebounding. On offense, the girls' passing and movement continues to improve and several terrific plays led to scoring opportunities. Just wait until those lay-ups start falling.. Natalia finished with 7 points and Belle added 2 points while leading the offense with point guard flair.
On Monday, our 5th Grade Boys lost a well fought game to St. Francis 20-26. Everyone displayed great effort and defense. Dan and Oscar scored 6 points each while Charlie, Efrain, Jake and Justin added 2 points each.
Go Gaels.

Coach's Game Notes:
Our 5th Grade Boys defeated St. A's 27-25. It was nip and tuck for 4 quarters, but Oscar G. made a clutch shot with less than a minute to go to put SJBC up by 2, he finished with 7 total points. Dan Clark had a season high of 17 points and Ky Kehl 2 and Justin Della had 1. Everybody contributed defensively to hold them to 25 points.
On Saturday, our 5th grade girls played a terrific game but tired and lost a close game in the last minutes to St. A's. Natalia Adriance scored 7 points and Belle Calforda had 2 points. But, on Monday night, the girls returned and turned the tables on St. A's winning 6-4 in an intense and hard fought contest. At times inspired on defense, the lady Gaels displayed incredible teamwork and effort to stifle St. A's at every turn. Teamwork and defense was the key to this game. Erin McClure scored an important basket late in the game to preserve the win. Belle scored 3 points and Natalia added 1 point. Gabby Picard, Olivia O-Brien, Lori Kunst and Maycie Welch all made significant contributions and plays in the game. It was a terrific total team effort.

St. John's Athletic teams each week benefit from the selfless service of all of our coaches. But it is the mentoring of our students by our Alumni that uniquely enriches our program at St. Johns. These high school students, while carrying a full load of their own responsibilities in High School, still want to give back and have an impact as a mentor to the players now playing basketball for St. John's.
Justin Siena Senior, Cody Orona, is just such an Alum who provides a wonderful example of mentoring and service. Without hesitation Cody agreed to partner with 6B's head coach Derek Krupa this season and work toward teaching the team a solid foundation for basketball success. The valuable skills he teaches the boys on the court come from years of playing basketball himself, but it is his commitment to the team that has made the biggest impression. Anytime St. John's athletes can see a member of their community offer help and guidance not for a big payoff or fanfare, but merely to help and give back is a priceless gift that all of the players benefit and grow from.

Thanks to Alumni like Cody, our St. John's Athletics program has layers uniquely our own that give our student athletes wonderful opportunities to learn about what it means to give back to your community.
Work hard and become a leader; be lazy and never succeed. (Proverbs 12:24)

Coaches' Game Notes:
Our 6th grade girls pulled off their first win of the season. Kimmy Fernandez had 8 of her 16 points with break away lay-ups and outside shots to spark a 10 - 4 first quarter lead. St Francis came back to tie the game, but thanks to a handful of steals and good defense from Jaycie Valine, St John's was able to hang close. The game was tied with 40 seconds left in the game when Kimmy Fernandez put up a shot and Jaycie Valine grabbed 2 offensive rebounds to keep it alive until Caroline Stiver came in to clean up the final rebound and put back the game winning shot with only seconds left on the clock for a 22 - 20 victory. It was an all-around team effort, with each player playing many positions - even guard Kathleen Schafle held her own at Center. This shows that all the good practice and hard work is paying off. Congrats to the 6th grade girls on a very big win. Let's keep it up!
Our 5th Grade Boys lost in a very tight defensive game to St. Rose by a score of 23-19. High scorers were Dan Clark 12, Oscar Guiterriez 3, Justin Della 2, and Jeffrey Gibbs 2. It was a tremendous defensive effort by the whole team.
Leading most of the game, our 5th Grade Girls lost their lead in the final minutes of the game to lose to St. Rose 19-14. The girls displayed total effort throughout, playing their hardest even when they had to play with only 4 players in the last quarter. Everyone on the team contributed during the game with high scorers being Natalia Adriance 10, Belle Calforda 2, and Maggie Prittie 2.
Go Gaels.

Our school is filled with student-athletes who not only train hard but also extend kindness to other athletes as they are competing. Anyone who has ever been on my team has known that my number one rule of the game is to help another player up.
On this opening day of 5th/6th season our teams played hard and never gave up - that is the true St John's spirit. Some of the athletes were met with a win while others were not, but most importantly, our athletes played with dignity.
I was able to watch the 5th and 6th grade boys play as well as the 5th grade girls (6th girls played in Healdsburg) Not only was I proud of how hard we played but I was more than proud when I got to witness Aaron, Jose, Natalia and Daniel help a player from the other team up during their games. Don't ever underestimate the power of kindness to one another because in that one simple act, you can make the world a better place.
But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Luke 6:35

Alumni News: Gael Basketball Pride is on display during every Napa High School girl's basketball game as St. John's Graduates, Tatum Souza and Maggie Wessell, are primary contributors to the Indian's 16-2 start to the season. Both ex-Gaels are also stars in the classroom with 4.0 plus averages that rank them towards the top of their academic class.
Tatum's response to the question: What lessons in life has basketball taught you?
-To be truly successful you have to all get along.-
Sounds like a good philosophy.
