Principal's Piece

A T-SHIRT, MORNING ASSEMBLY AND LOTS OF LOVE -

So, Saturday, I'm standing at the soda dispenser, artistically achieving the delicate ratio of ice-to-diet coke when I hear, "Your t-shirt's right, you know." "Excuse me?" I reply. "What your t-shirt says on the back. It's right." My observer suggests. Then I remembered. I was debuting my latest in "promotion wear"; a slate grey, Justin-Siena, "Le Miserables" t-shirt. On the back, the Director had highlighted these words from the script: "To Love Another Person is to See the Face of God". Right there in Panda Express, I'd become a subtle evangelist. The reader and I spoke for a few minutes and then I raced off to another baseball game.

Sunday brought Mother's Day and more talk of love. Homemade cards, hugs, kisses (at least from the youngest child) and a simple family BBQ. To my surprise, Monday morning continued the theme. During morning assembly, our student body heard the following words from the Gospel of John, "They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father and I will love them and reveal myself to them... Those who love me will keep my word and my Father will love them."

So much talk of love! So much experience of love! What does Jesus expect of us? Of course, we know "love" takes many forms and is described by many definitions. In this Gospel reading, it seems we are challenged to be faithful... dedicated... committed to God. We show our children our love in every decision we make for them, in every moment we listen to them and in every hug we give them. Our care for our children, in turn, shows our love for God. The poetic words ring true, "To love another person is to see the face of God." Do we recognize and appreciate this often enough? Do we tell our children we love them? Love is a simple concept really, but it never hurts to be gently reminded and called into action... especially during our chaotically busy lives of lessons, practices and homework... even at the soda dispenser.

Have a Faith-Filled May.

In Peace,
Nancy Jordan
Principal

"Bathing Suit Drive" To Support the Children of the Tenderloin Neighborhood in San Francisco

St. John the Baptist Catholic School will be holding a "Bathing Suit Drive" to support the children of the Tenderloin neighborhood in San Francisco.

Remarkably, there are a huge number of children living in the Tenderloin who do not know how to swim. In fact, many have never been to nor seen the ocean. Many of the children are Southeast Asian immigrants with no exposure to swimming.

Since the Kroc Center, in San Francisco, opened this past June, the children's swim lessons in the new pool have been very popular. The Kroc Center has discovered that many children arriving for their first time swim lessons do not own swim suits. So the Kroc Center has begun a swim suit lending policy to ensure all children can attend the swim lessons.

A bin will be placed in the hallway at the school and we ask that families of St. John the Baptist Catholic School donate swim suits. THE SUITS CAN BE EITHER NEW OR GENTLY USED
