In an economy in which bailouts are a constant topic of conversation and the closing of businesses is commonplace, opening a retail shop would not appeal to many people. However, for the team behind Napa’s newest secondhand store Twice is Nice, the timing couldn’t seem more appropriate.
“It’s a perfect time to open a secondhand store because the economy is still very tough, people are watching their budgets, and there are a lot of people who have good-quality items that they no longer have use for. Our store will give these items new life,” said Terri Pope, manager of Twice is Nice, the thrift store run by St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and School.

More than 200 St. John the Baptist Catholic School students, in their new jog-a-thon T-shirts designed by seventh-grader Caroline Stiver, came out to run at the Justin-Siena High School track on Friday, Oct. 8.
The atmosphere felt like an outdoor party, with music blasting and students, from kindergarten to eighth grade, and teachers sharing the track as they jogged, walked or danced around, earning money for their school.
Fourth-grader Devon Bose ran the most laps with 22. Overall, about 2,200 laps were completed in 45 minutes.

Sunday, Oct. 10, 20l0 (10-10-10) would be a busy day for this scribe, but one filled with happiness, joy and wonder shared with folks in our own special Shangri-La — our valley surrounded by hills and mountains where snow never reaches the ground.
On that Sunday morning, I attended a 50th anniversary Mass at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Napa for Sister Joyce Poeschl, and later that day I’d enjoy the music of our lives, the big band sounds of “In The Mood” at the Lincoln Theater in Yountville

A few weeks ago, while reading the Aug. 2 edition of the Napa Valley Register, I came across one of my favorite pages, “Kids Scoop.” It’s the place where young Napa students have the opportunity to take a whack at the subject on hand. This time, that subject was “Moon Made of Cheese.”

Dear editor,
We are blessed to live in Napa. The valley’s beauty and natural resources are matched by a caring business community that donates in record numbers, teaching our children the value of giving back. Also impressive is the personal commitment and participation of individuals who give their time and support to people and causes beyond themselves. On April 25, St. John the Baptist Catholic School celebrated its seventh annual One Heart at a Time Gala. We were honored to have the support of many within and beyond our immediate school community....for more click on link.
