St. John's School Foundation is an endowment fund designed to ensure the long-term life of the school. People give in various ways: as a response to the alumni newsletter, The Herald, as a gift in memory of a friend or loved one, as a gift in honor of someone's anniversary or other occasion. The pastor sends a letter of thanks to all donors, who may progress through the various levels of giving with each successive gift. Although the school may draw the interest from the Foundation as needs arise, the primary purpose of the endowment fund is to accumulate a healthy principal in order to face the future with confidence.
The Herald is our newsletter for alumni, school parents, and friends of St. John's. Named in honor of our patron saint, it is published twice a year: on June 24, Feast of the Birth of John the Baptist, and at the beginning of Advent, the season of the Baptist's call to prepare the way of the Lord. It features news of school happenings, profiles of alumni, details of upcoming events, and records of donations.
Scholarships are a valuable tool in making Catholic education accessible to all. Last year we received $7,500 from Trust Fund Incorporated which enabled four families to join St. John's. Another recent addition is the Brother Bede Scholarship. Brother Bede died last year after a lifetime of service as a Christian Brother.
Bequests are a most effective way of supporting St. John's. We recently received two such gifts from alumni: Frances McCartney Bacci, '21, and Charlie Fullert, '29. Frances and Charlie had designated their donations long before their final illnesses. We are grateful and proud that these alumni loved their alma mater so much. We also receive such bequests from parishioners, most recently, Madeline Swanson. May their souls rest in peace.
The Anniversary Celebration is a major event for St. John's. In the morning, 70-80 golfers enjoy a round at the magnificent Chardonnay Shakespeare course; in the afternoon, 32 tennis players compete at the Napa Valley Country Club's attractive courts; and in the evening, the players are joined by the alumni and parishioners for a gourmet dinner and a night of memories. Sports prizes are awarded; guest speakers have included the retired Bishop of Sacramento, Francis Quinn, class of '35, and Orlando Cepeda, the Baby Bull himself; the auctions, Live and Silent, are both entertaining and lucrative; the meal is cooked by St. John's Men's Club and served by St. John's Junior High students; and the entire day becomes a celebration of Catholic education in an atmosphere of healthy sport and joyful camaraderie.
